Implementation of gastric cancer screening - the global experience.

2014

Gastric cancer (GC) is still an important global healthcare problem, and in absolute figures it is going to remain at the present level in foreseeable future. In general, survival of patients with GC is poor mainly due to advanced-stage diagnosis. Early-stage GC can be cured by endoscopic resection or less invasive surgical treatment. Unfortunately, there is no appropriate screening strategy available for global application. This article provides a description of established national and regional GC screening programs and the screening modalities used. This review also summarizes current approaches to develop cancer-screening biomarkers. Although candidates with initial promising results ha…

Recent advances in Nanomaterial-mediated Bio and immune sensors for detection of aflatoxin in food products

2017

Abstract Aflatoxin is the most harmful mycotoxin which is ubiquitous in foods and agricultural supplies. Since the health of human population is largely determined by the condition of food-producing, contaminated foods and agricultural supplies with aflatoxin can put the safety of people in jeopardy and lead to some fatal disease. In 2003 estimated the annual cost of aflatoxin contamination in the U.S. at about $500 million strong concern for human life. There are a great demand for development of rapid, sensitive and specific methods for detection of aflatoxin at trace levels. The purpose of this review is limited to novel aflatoxin biosensors, paying special attention to those based on th…

HSP27 : une nouvelle cible pour traiter la fibrose pulmonaire idiopathique ?

2020

Idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) is a progressive and fatal disease without therapeutic options. The development of new therapeutic strategies for the disease is needed. IPF is characterized by myofibroblast accumulation and collagen overproduction. Transforming growth factor-β1 (TGF-β1) is a key cytokine activating these pathological processes. Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are crucial regulators and promote TGF-β1 activity. Among them, HSP27 is overexpressed in animal models and in the lung of patients with IPF. HSP27 activates pro-fibrotic mechanisms and therefore may represents a potential target. Strategies aiming to inhibit HSP27 might pave the way towards new treatment options for pa…

The craniofacial necrotizing fasciitis after a minor trauma in an elderly white woman

2014

The term necrotizing fasciitis /NF/ was probably first described by Jones in 1871 as “hospital gangrene”. NF, with its fast spreading from the local infection to massive necrosis of the underlying tissues, ie. superficial fascia and subcutaneous layers, is a potentially fatal disease, unless diagnosed early and properly treated. NF is more frequent in frail patients with chronic debilitating illnesses, immune deficiencies or from a poor social background. Sixty percent of NF cases occur in females. Here we present a case of necrotizing fasciitis of the head and neck region after a minor trauma (phenol blocks due to severe neuropathic pain) in an 82-year-old female with the history of trigem…
